ETHYLENE...HUH?
Ethylene gas is an odourless and colourless gas emitted by many fruits and vegetables through its natural process of respiration. Ethylene is the critical factor in accelerating the ripening process in fresh produce. It causes fruits in storage to soften and decay, it also causes vegetables & flowers to yellow and wilt.
By removing/neutralising ethylene, loss of shelf-life & throw-out wastage can be avoided. beFresh can help you achieve exactly this, we use the mineral potassium permanganate as a neutralising agent to eliminate ethylene present around your fresh produce.
A significant percentage of the fruit and vegetables that customers purchase these days are wasted as a result of softening, wilting and decay.
All fruits and vegetables give off ethylene gas as they ripen and some produce types emit significant levels of ethylene. Much of the produce in the home refrigerator is sensitive to the presence of even very low levels of ethylene gas.
